The SWOT-landscape ® analysis makes the traditional SWOT analysis significantly more efficient by systematically highlighting setting of objectives, gaining commitment from stakeholders, generation of alternatives, calculation/visualization of relative performance (RPE) and monitoring of result.

Provides tracking, ranking & predictions of DEVELOPMENT FORCES & COMPETITIVE FORCES

TARGET AREA mapping & tracking of multi-dimensional position changes between HIGH UNCERTAINTY areas & LOW UNCERTAINTY (high performance) areas counter uncertainty across projects, products-/services and organizational units as well as identifying those factors that are likely to provide optimized competitive force.

The SWOT-Radar Screen ® will make the traditional SWOT analysis  significantly more efficient by systematically highlighting setting of objectives, gaining commitment from stakeholders, generation of alternatives, calculation/visualization of relative performance (RPE) and monitoring of result.

The traditional SWOT matrix as well as Balanced Scorecard (BCS) are used as intermediate stepping stones vis-à-vis the SWOT-landscape analysis. All different managerial aspects in Balanced Scorecard (BCS) are entirely open for performance tracking, position searching, what-if-analysis and sector analysis.  Accordingly Balanced Scorecard (BCS) perspectives are easily reached in the SWOT-landscape (as in screen pictures above which take advantage of the four main perspectives in Balanced Scorecard with regard to performance tracking, visualization and predictions).

The new SWOT-algorithms integrate, compress and map the following system characteristics:

- Cause-effect insights (managerial experience and intuition with regard to causal relation ships),
- Scenario development (multi-actor approach within a sector during a selected or infinite time period) and,
- Quantitative data

The SWOT-algorithms processes and condense visually input from hundreds different tables over infinite (or selected) time periods into one single 3-D-image (the SWOT-landscape ®). The SWOT-Radar Screen ® is the hub from which a value creating sector is accessed, questioned, adjusted and (eventually) reconfigured by support of the SWOT-algorithms. As a result the algorithms display which variables are likely to dictate the future course of events. Visit our "Quick-Start-Guide"!

They produce new knowledge and business intelligence information in the context of innovative development & investment processes (covering wide-ranging business problems as well as specific projects).

SWOT-landscape ® analysis services offer support in development loops & sequential passages localized in operational phases as well as in the basic learning phase, discovery-, milestone- or stage gate phases.

The SWOT-Radar Screen ® responds to these needs and challenges by carrying out visualization and analysis in which the state of performance is viewed in terms of relative changes, movements, sizes, shapes and colors.

Relative performance evaluation in management control

Opportunities, risks etc. in the SWOT-landscape ® are calculated, visualized and predicted as changes of relative performance inside a target area in which several objects - by deploying different means and prioritizations - struggles to reach the (topographically) visualized performance heights (represented by a - across projects - similar target, target standard-setting based on peer group comparison or any other universally defined target value).

Mouse clicking on SWOT-Radar Screen ® exposes the importance of each success factor. By use of What-If-Analysis tool simulations are done, time-to-reach and competitive velocity towards alternative positions calculated etc. May be a few competitive factors are under-prioritized (weakness or threats => “step on the gas”), some are over-weighted (strenghts or may be over-weighted) but most of the competitive factors are well balanced and require no further concern ....?

Creating transparence by addressing the entire spectrum of uncertainties & competitive forces

Passing through critical development loops or sequential passages is made TRANSPARENT as the RELATIVE PERFORMANCE algorithms compares, ranks & predicts success- & risk variables across projects or organizational units and along the whole range of the uncertainty matrix.

By integrating uncertainty matrix & RPE Window the SWOT-algorithms supports control and foresightedness according to requirements related to tangible and intangible assets valuation in the new International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), US GAAP and Basel II stipulations. The SWOT-landscape project is for ex. also influenced by Swedish Governments advancement with regard to transparency and portfolio management in eGovernment.

Relative Performance Evaluation (RPE) has during 1970 – 2000 mainly been used for performance evaluation on the executive level as a part of a compensation plan (e.g. “be the best” and then actual CEO-performance has been compared to peer group performance). During latest years the scoop of RPE has been extended - particularly as it provides an objective performance target - into management control in a broader sense. That is, the need to facilitate cross-units comparisons and learning’s by explicitly considers the change of target impact arising from (over time) changing behavioral characteristics.

Countering uncertainty & optimization of competitive force at all organizational levels & project phases

The need for standard-setting based on relative performance management has accordingly been extended from execute level into areas where absolute (or static) performance cannot accurately reflect managerial effort ("controllable" performance).

For ex. down from execute level to divisional-, departments-, programs- and project managers levels as wells as into store's, sales organizational performace, farmer's return to industry, governmental performance measurement in the public sector, fund managers fees in the pension fund industry, discussions about so called "unintended consequences of option-based compensations" etc.

What’s more, the visualization presumes a unified and consistent conceptual language as well as a shared communicative platform. By reducing the information asymmetry the SWOT-mode is able to support the connections between (internal) value-creators as well as the value-creating match between customer and supplier.

SWOT-landscape ® is a generic tool aimed for all who are engaged in any kind of value creation activities. To explore the potentials in favor of "short key" algorithms for management of sustainable growth and value the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA) makes this new software package available.
